Canoes in various stages of production. 1. A carefully
sized block ready to have the top cutout made to give the canoe
its high stern and bow. 2. The top cutout has been made with a
band saw on this piece. 3. The first fore and aft cut by the dado
cutter has been made. Note: the block is loaded into the clamping
box upside-down. 4. Shorter cuts nearer the sides have been made
with stroke-limiting rods installed in the dado cutting jig. The
dado cutting enables wood to be quickly removed from the block.
5. The block has had more wood removed by the use of a router.
The device which enables this is the router template jig, which
is more closely detailed in subsequent photos. 6. The tapered
hull shape and rounded ends have been cut with a band saw. 7.
The hull has been carved to a more precise shape and then sanded.
The carving is done on a carving duplicating machine pictured
later. 8. The completed canoe, along with display base and paddles.
