Ely, Minnesota, is the Canoe Capital of the World,
and only a few miles from the famed Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness
(BWCAW), located in Superior National Forest. State Highway 169 meets
Highway 53 at Virginia, Minnesota and continues northeast to Ely, Minnesota
in the center of the forest. Ely is a popular northern Minnesota tourist
destination point. There is a visitor center in Ely, which is part of
the International Wolf Center. Each year, thousands of visitors come to
the Wolf Center to see and learn about the gray wolf, a rarely seen and
threatened natural resident of the region. From Ely, you can access the
Superior National Forest via the Fernberg Road (Highway 169) and via the
Echo Trail (County Road 116).
